What is Stud Welding?

Stud Welding is the process of fastening a weld stud (or “stud”) to a base metal material. The key factor that differentiates stud welding from other forms of welding is that it’s a one-step semi-automated process. The application is virtually instantaneous and leaves in most cases no reverse-side markings. Using a “stud gun” to apply the fastener to the base metal makes this process simple and efficient.

Types – Arc Welding and CD Welding

Two primary forms of stud welding are “Arc” and “Capacitive Discharge (CD)”. Each process differs in the application and materials they are most suitable for.

Arc Stud Welding

Arc welding is used for larger diameter studs and thicker base metals. Arc stud welding is distinct in that it uses a ceramic ferrule during the welding process.

The ferrule contains the weld and shields the operator from the arc during the fusion process. The arc stud welding process provides a full fusion weld in less than a second.

  • First, load the weld stud into the gun and place it on the parent metal.
  • Then, pull the trigger and the gun shaft pulls up and discharges energy through the stud. This creates a weld arc melting both the tip of the fastener and the parent metal.
  • The ceramic ferrule retains the heat and the molten material in the weld site.
  • Once both the stud and the parent metal are molten, the stud is plunged into the base metal.
  • Finally, cooling and solidification occur, resulting in a strong fusion bond between the fastener and parent metal!

Materials commonly used for Arc Stud Welding include Mild Steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminum.

Arc Welding is best suited for structural and load-bearing applications.

CD Stud Welding

CD welding is used for smaller diameter fasteners and thin base metals. Most CD studs and fasteners have a special tip, which aids in the alignment and power-discharge process. The size of the stud and the thickness of the base metal affects the visibility of reverse-side marking once the weld is complete.

  • First, load the weld stud into the gun and place it on the parent metal.
  • Then, Trigger the stud gun and energy is released from the stud gun into the fastener.
  • The tip of the stud and a small portion of the base metal melts.
  • The stud is then forced into the molten material through spring-loaded action.
  • Finally, a full fusion weld between the parent metal and stud itself is the result!

Materials commonly used for CD welding include Mild Steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminum.

Additionally, the CD Stud’s weld base may be flanged or non-flanged.

CD Welding is best suited for thin sheet metal and precision applications.
